KNOCKING OUT eighteen songs with no guitar changes, playing your first gig in nearly a decade to a packed house was a treat for not only this popular local foursome, but the masses too.
Opener D D Debbie and Can’t Do That, actual start tracks on the band’s second album Man In a Dogsuit, set the scene well. Frontman Ian Lynam, at times using a few too many vulgarities, really was in fine form and seemed to be having a ball. Many bands don’t get that but Burdock know their craft. The engine men Darren Crome and bassist and backing vocalist Paul Whittington steered the ship nicely leaving axeman Stewart Whawell to duel skilfully with vocalist and guitarist Ian.

Whilst not knowing all the tracks, I did enjoy Too Much, Sometimes, along with its infectious bassy feel, and David Pykett, who apparently is actually a person and was stood next to me. What an honour to have a song named after oneself.
Burdock ploughed on, knocking out all the belters, including Chopper, Slapper and gradually made their way to the set’s end, which included another favourite, Tom Said, along with others taken from their first album, Come As A Guest, Leave As A Friend. Predictably, the big crowd favourite, Everyone, closed a very successful evening which was made all the better by ending before 10:30pm. A sensible time I felt.

Burdock made a good effect to make the evening work, with a decent P.A. being the cake’s cherry. And the large backdrop looked good too. Many local bands come and go, and whilst Burdock have had their time away, the turn out they received at Marehay proved there is still affection for their type of music and, hopefully, this wont be the last we hear of them.
