STAR DAME SHEFFIELD CHURCH HOUSE

FORMING a unit consisting of just two makes an interesting ride for both viewer and band alike, yet Sheffield duo Star Dame seem to take all this in their stride. Whilst the Sunday evening pews remained sparse, that didn’t deter the energy as the up-tempo Pink Stuff got the ball rolling, followed by a Beatles classic Come Together, which the band gained official license to release.  The grooves continued with Stormy Monday, a slower bluesy number which displayed front woman Marija’s voice off nicely, thus giving the set balance and feel.

Comprising Marija Kons on vocals and guitar, and boy can she play, plus Dave Burgoyne on drums, synth bass and occasional backing vocals which keeps him busy, all songs flowed well as strong originals and decent covers kept the regulars happy. An excellent version of the not often heard Beatles tune Blackbird, was good, as was You’re The Voice, by British born Australian singer John Farnham, a big hit back in 1986 and still well-received today. With intermission looming Star Dame closed the first half with Awake and Dirty Old Crow.

With a few more punters creeping in Star Dame continued the tunes as this likable duo gave it their all. Front woman Marija did a sterling job and also remembered to smile which is always nice. The man at the back certainty earned his corn as often he just plays one handed, the other reserved for the machine to his left which supplies bass riffs and other fills. Star Dame have only been together a short time yet already have amassed a nice sixteen song set, (I’m sure there are others tucked away) plus have high followers on social media. You only have to see them in the flesh to grasp both individuals have talent so it’ll be interesting to see how the band develops.
