METAL AT THE EDGEFOLD CLUB MATLOCK

BILLED AS a three band rock extravaganza it was heartening to see a good turn out at this well-established venue, the first time I think they’ve actually had a full blown metal event, as foursome Dreadnought hit the stage running. Fronted by strong vocals and heavy guitar this gang  did their best at winning over the crowd with songs from their repertoire, though a few choice covers would’ve helped their cause.

Matlock boys 3 Second Fuse followed with their eight song set, and have made good strides since our last encounter, opening with the first of many original tunes, Walking Sam.

Fronted by Mike Richardson on guitar vocals, bassist Martin Bennett, Andy Richardson on guitar, plus tubsman Red Lee at the back, the Fuse boys know how to deliver. Having been a unit for over fifteen years they’ve done the ground work plus have secreted several tricks up their sleeves, namely the excellent cover of Blue Monday by New Order. Yes, they play their own tunes, and they do play them well, but this really was a good choice and had the floor rocking.  With self-penned World Breaker followed by an interesting Black Sabbath medley, their slot was up. For next time, maybe they should flip things and close with New Order, as ending on a high with a floor full rocking bodies bodes well for future shows.

With headliners Setrakain, a five-some from the Buxton area knocking out their brand of metal rock including a decent fist of a Lamb Of God cover, its fair to say all three bands did a sterling job and gave the local rock scene a good kick up the backside.

What did strike me throughout was how good each band’s drummers were, which as many know is the beating heart of a good band and sadly overlooked by some.

Although the sound was at times over loud and some decent lighting would’ve helped, overall a good night was had by all.
