MARIJA KONS ABBEYDALE LIVE SHEFFIELD

WITH glorious weather, the scene was more than set for this popular multi-venue, street-wide, Sheffield festival that runs for two days in April. Starting at The Broadfield on Abbeydale Road, I checked out Marija Kons and her new band. With the sun shinning they took to the outside stage rather promptly which was nice, as Black Bird opened their short seven song set with Stormy Monday soon to follow.

From the outset it needs mentioning that whilst all these talented musicians had a wealth of experience, and it showed, they’d only been together less than a fortnight, only had minimal rehearsal time, if any, yet the large crowd gave them warm and respectful applause. This strong song set contained some of Marija’s own tunes plus well-chosen covers, and whilst a few more well – known ones would have benefited, I particularly enjoyed the Cream tune, I’m So Glad, which for my money was delivered perfectly.

Drumming duties were top draw from Wisdom Ohue, with backing vocals by Richard Memmott on bass and (Sneaky) Pete Bishop-Wells who added saxophone sounds to enhance the experience. With Marija blasting out the guitars and vocals, I felt for a first time performance the gang did well. And whilst they are currently nameless, Sunset Fire was mooted by Marija post show which her entourage all discussed and head-nodded in semi-agreement. For the future it might be worth keeping all eyes posted on the local music scene for this Sheffield based unit, as going by this first performance things might just be hotting up.
